When a group of you go to a Beefeater Restaurant you know pretty much what you are letting yourself in for. Cheap, Cheerful and mundanely consistent, coupled with some waitress who is going to interrupt the start of your meal with the standard question “is everything ok?” at which point she is magically transported into another dimension before you even have the chance to take breath and answer, but you know all that and it’s not really a problem.
So what happens when a group of you go to an upmarket restaurant in London? Fancy a Steak?
Yes please I would like it rare. It arrives and then your plate does a dance with one of your neighbours as the waiters cannot identify which is rare and which is medium/well-done!
So when the Maître d' asks in a phoney French Accent is everything alright and you actually get the time to take a breath and point out the steak is medium/well done and not rare.
O Sacrebleu we will sort this out immediatement, my plate disappeared and then the Maître d' came back to explain that the chef was going to butterfly the steak (cut it down the middle) so that it would cook quicker and I would have a plate full of food in front of me within moments.
Cracking Service! But when the plate appears and the new steak is still medium/well done (probably even more towards well done than the previous attempt!) and you say to the Maître d' don’t mess about I will take it as it is and then he says “Maybe Monsieur should order it Bleu next time”.
Christ Almighty if at that stage he hadn’t been magically transported into another dimension before I smacked the little twat there could have been serious trouble!
Was there ever a next time to order a Bleu Steak at Le Pont de la Tour? Not likely!
